Health & Safety Management
Health & safety is a priority for the Group, with almost 13 million man-hours worked in 2009. The Group is in compliance with Russian regulatory requirements and is now building on that basis by introducing management systems and risk-based approaches to managing health and safety. Pokrovskiy and Pioneer have implemented independently verified health and safety management systems in accordance with OHSAS 18001.
Health and safety is managed at an operating company level, with support provided at a Group level. A senior full-time Executive Committee member based in Amur has been appointed to coordinate and drive forward the implementation of new health and safety management systems and report directly to the HSE Committee on health and safety matters. At the Group's principal projects these health and safety management systems are being, or have been, aligned with international best practice.
External auditors appointed by the HSE Committee visit the company's operations annually. OAO Pokrovskiy Rudnik (the entity that holds the Pokrovskiy and Pioneer licences) has implemented independently verified health and safety management systems in accordance with OHS AS 18001.
Ongoing monitoring and risk assessment is an important part of the identification and management of health & safety risks at Group operations. Accidents and incidents are followed-up rigorously by internal health & safety managers with the aim of reducing the likelihood of similar accidents occurring in the future.
