Giproruda

Giproruda, one of the oldest leading mining engineering institutes in Russia, was acquired by the Group in 2006. Its scope of work includes the design, coordination of construction and commissioning of quarries and mines, including those in challenging geological and climatic conditions. Since it was established in May 1931, the institute has made significant contributions to the ferrous and non-ferrous mining industry, the chemical and salt industries and the production of building materials. The institute has developed a range of new mining technologies that have contributed to a more effective mine plan.

The institute employs 154 specialists, 5 of which are PhD holders. The institute is based in St Petersburg.

In 2007 and 2008 the institute established a research laboratory for autoclave oxidation of gold-bearing ores and concentrates. It is envisaged that work at this laboratory work will provide the Group with new technologies that can be used at its gold mining projects, in particular at Pioneer and Malomir.

In addition to its work within the Group, the institute has contributed to the construction and development of over 200 projects in many regions of Russia, Kazakhstan and the Caucuses, including 115 projects for processing iron ore, limestone, dolomite, chromium, manganese, magnetites, refractory clay, quartzite and sand. Giproruda has also worked with enterprises in China, India, Iran, Egypt, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Uzbekistan, Tadzhikistan, Turkmenia, and Estonia. The Institute has developed both the preliminary design and engineering documentation for plants in Poland, Algeria, Korea, Nigeria, Latvia, Turkey, Cuba, Syria, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Vietnam and Morocco.
